nadaam
Come enjoy the sights and feeling of thousands of Chingiss Khan’s descendents showing off their skill and strength this summer. Here in Mongolia where life is hard and grueling it only stands to reason that the ‘three manly games’ of Naadam should be the same. Naadam easily rivals the Olympics as the earth’s oldest games. Mongolian’s maintain that Naadam separates the boys from the men.

You will see the dust long before you see the horses. Children as young as five years old participate in the horse races that take place over a period of two days. After fifteen miles over uneven terrain it seems as if the riders are willing their ride to continue towards the finish line. Come and feel the ground shake as hundreds of hoofs pound for miles across the steppes.
Wrestling in Mongolia is the national obsession. Traffic in the capitol comes to a stop when wrestling bouts are televised. During Naadam for two days, fifteen hours a day, hundreds of Mongols face off in single elimination battle. Unlike Sumo or Olympic wrestling, there is no margin for error. If any part of the body touches the ground the match is over. The field of wrestlers is cut in half, then again and again until only two mighty Mongols are left. At the end of this combat one will become a household name on the plains.
Outside the wrestling stadium descendants of Chingiss Khan’s ‘Golden Horde’ show why their calvary was able to create one of the largest empires in the world. Here archers take aim at tiny targets 75 meters away. A line of 360 leather rings run in a line perpendicular to the archers between two rows of dirt mounds. The backbone of the bow is hand carved birch forming a double curve. The traditional Mongol bow delivers explosive acceleration and awesome velocity. However Mongolian bows have no sights. The arrows are made of willow sticks and vulture feathers tipped with huge hexahedral roughly carved bone. This is truly a display of making something difficult look easy.
Come and be a part of Mongolia’s colorful and traditional display of age old customs.
