Let’s go West! West of Ulaan Baatar that is. Here we will explore Kharakorum, the capitol of the Mongolian Empire in the 13th Century. We will also explore the history of Erdene Zuu Monastery. It is the oldest surviving Buddhist monastery in Mongolia. It was built in 1585 and today is an active temple and museum open to visitors. We will visit Taikar Rock and the ‘holy tree’ by the Chuluut River. The scenery will captivate you as we continue on to explore the extinct Khorgo volcano. Here you will see solidified lava bubbles. The scenery, fishing and wildlife around Ugii Lake will make you want to linger. We will then reach Hustai Nuruu National Park. Here we will see the only true wild horse species alive today. The locals call them ‘Taki’ but they are more commonly known as Przevalski wild horse. These horses only live in the wild in Mongolia.
Western Tour Itinerary
Day one: arrive in Ulaan Bataar and check into hotel or guest house. Lunch in Mongolian restaurant. Take city tour of Gandan Monastery, Sukhbaatar Square, cultural palace, opera and ballet theatre, and Zaison Memorial. Dinner and overnight in hotel.
Day 2: After breakfast head towards Kharakorum. On the way stop at sand dunes and explore on foot or on camel. Lunch. Continue on to Kharakorum and visit Erdene Zuu the first Buddhist Monastery. Dinner. Overnight in ger camp or in tents by the river.
Day 3: After breakfast head to Tsenker hot spring. Lunch on the way. Bathe in hot spring and explore surrounding area. Visit nomadic family. Overnight in ger or in tents.
Day 4: After breakfast drive to the White Lake and volcano. On the way stop to explore Taikhar rock and have lunch. Drive to Chuluut River and visit the ‘holy tree’ and explore the canyon. Overnight with nomadic family or in tents.
Day 5: After breakfast explore more of the volcano area. Lunch. Take an opportunity to explore on horseback or on foot the area of the White Lake. Visit with local nomads and play some traditional Mongolian games. Overnight in ger or in tents.
Day 6: After breakfast a full day of driving to Ugii Lake. Lunch on the way. At the lake there will be time for a swim or just enjoy the surrounding beauty. Overnight in ger or tents.
Day 7: After breakfast drive to Hustai Nuruu a protected area where we can see the Przevalski wild horses. Spend the day in this area with a picnic lunch and exploring. Overnight in ger or tents.
Day 8: Drive back to Ulaan Baatar and clean up at hotel or guesthouse. Enjoy an evening performance by a Mongolian folklore group. Overnight in hotel or guesthouse.
Day 9: Transfer for departure.
